Resumen
El género Electroma se encuentra constituido por bivalvos de pequeña a mediana talla que han sido estudiados marginalmente. Estos bivalvos se distribuyen principalmente en los Océanos Índico y Pacífico. Recientemente E. vexillum se ha reportado como una especie exótica e introducida en el Mediterráneo y Atlántico tropical. Sin embargo, debido a la poca información del género, los registros y especies del Atlántico presentan problemas en su identificación. En este trabajo se describe conquiliológica y morfológicamente a E. spinosa sp. nov. recolectada en el golfo de México, y se presentan diagnosis basadas en la literatura para las otras especies del género. Los ejemplares recolectados fueron fijados y preservados en etanol 70% y observados con microscopio; se emplearon microtomografías de rayos X para la observación detallada de la concha y disecciones para la observación detallada de la morfología. Se rastreó literatura con descripciones o imágenes de las otras especies del género para la elaboración de diagnosis y claves que permitan su identificación. Se detectó que el ala anterior derecha y la zona nacarada son caracteres útiles para identificar las especies de Electroma, mientras que otras características como la forma y escultura de la concha deben de emplearse con precaución por la alta variación intraespecífica del género. Se reporta por primera vez la presencia de estructuras pigmentadas con posible función fotosensorial en el manto medio para la familia Vulsellidae. Se discute sobre el estatus de Electroma como exótico o nativo en el Atlántico tropical y la validez de E. electra.
